Four years ago, I moved from Moscow to New York. Now that I am eighteen, I am about to graduate from New York Film Academy acting program. Now that I have a decent resume (I have lots of foreign training, one off- Broadway play and student films from NYFA), I am planning on moving to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. After conducting some research, I made a decision to study with Ivana Chubbuck and M.K Lewis in order to further my acting abilities and make contacts. I am planning on attending seminars and doing showcases to meet theatrical agents and casting directors. I have 8,000 and a car with me and I want to support myself by being a bartender ( I am in a process of getting my bartending license). Is there anything I need to be aware of? Any kind of help will be appreciated.|||I'm an LA Actor giving you the REAL DEAL!

I don't agree with MK Lewis's book. It's outdated for he says to have black and white headshots and not color. In LA, you HAVE to have color or you'll get laughed out.

Most of students of Chubbuck studios never get to study with Ivanna, herself. You also DON'T get to work every week. You're lucky if you can work two weeks of the 4 weeks in a month.

Here's the cliffnotes version of what you need to succeed in LA:
1.EDUCATE YOURSELF FIRST!

READ these before you go to LA:

*Acting is Everything: Gold Edition-Judy Kerr
*How to Be a Working Actor-Mari Lyn Henry and Lynne Rogers
*Self Management for Actors-Bonnie Gillespie
-How to Get Arrested-J. Wallach Michael and Paul Thurwachter
*An Agent Tells All-Tony Martinez
-One Less Bitter Actor: The Actor's Survival Guide-Markus Flanagan
-So You Want to Be in Showbusiness?- Steve R. Stevens
-Acting Truths and Lies (purchased at www.info4actors.com)
*Book the Job-Doug Warhit

2.GET TRAINING!

Regardless of how "talented" you might be, you NEED training, PERIOD!

Scene Study/Acting (It varies. Some schools are not for everyone. Chubbuck, Eric Morris, and Howard Fine are not for people who aren't fans of Strasberg or Uta Hagen (ie. affective memory and substitution.) Playhouse West, Joanne Baron/DW Brown, and Acting Corps are more Meisner oriented. Try to audit these places and make sure if they're for you or not.

-Stella Adler

6. Get an Agent

To get an agent, you need to get GREAT headshots, a good resume, and training from the best. These are enough to get you a commercial agent at least. Getting a GOOD theatrical agent (Film/tv) takes longer. Most good theatrical agents won鈥檛 see you unless you鈥檙e SAG, have a polished resume, and a demo reel. Commercial agents are more lenient about that. What the best Commercial agents want to see on your resume are good commercial classes, improv, and cold reading.

You can get an agent multiple ways. Here are a few common ways:
-Mail in an unsealed manilla envelope with a CONCISE coverletter and headshot with the resume stapled on the back. If you have a demoreel include that too.
-Attend a showcase and impress them. By showcase I do not mean scammy conventions like IMTA, IPOP, Proscout, or Best New Talent. I mean legit ones like at Actor Connection, Reel pros, Network Studios, etc.
-Get a referral from a friend who is with the agency that you鈥檙e interested in

DON鈥橳
-Email them unless they tell you to. IT鈥橲 UNPROFESSIONAL!
-Call unless they tell you to. ALSO UNPROFESSIONAL!
-Walk in and ask for a meeting. UNPROFESSIONAL THREE!
-Sign with them if they ask for upfront money, make you take new photos with THEIR photographer, or take THEIR classes. Agent鈥檚 ONLY make money when you do. Agents usually make 10% on film/tv and commercials and 20% on commercial print.

Privilege|||As others have already mentioned stay focused when you get to Los Angeles as there is a a lot to distract you from your ultimate goal. Try to spend as little of your savings as possible in this move and build it back up as quickly. There are many nice buildings in the Los Angeles area, places like Culver City, that would require a deposit from you but not necessarily first and last months rent which would go a long way towards preserving your cash.|||You probably will do all right. NYFA is a rip off. As long as you are a citizen or have a green card so you can work. Los Angeles is really tough. I think there are better places to study in LA. You need to read my free book and the books that I recommend in it and my blog at www.kenplonkeyacting.com|||It's not going to be easy at all. Just stay focused and make sure you remember what your going to california for. Bartending is great and you will get alot of tips just dont get caught up in all the night life. Keep to your work and career and it will pay off, then you can relax. Good Luck!! I'm trying to make it in this crazy industry also.|||Yes, it will be harder than you think. Bartending will get you extra money from tips. Good luck and you'll see a lot of dissappointments but no matter what things will always be better in the future. Remember this, there a lot of jerks and be strong!|||WOW you have done well for yourself!
