Making a paste out of the food you are eating then adding it on top of the remainder main food can make for a usually pretty dish with nice texture variance. For example adding fresh tomato paste or puree on top of slices of tomato. Garnishing with a sprig of parsley freshens the the other food and makes the food more appetizing.

It will remain hot|||I would steam or boil small cubes of it until tender, drain and then add garlic, coarse ground pepper and a little seasoning salt. It is similar to Rutabagas and those are the ultimate comfort food and worth the hassle it is to chop them up.|||Handling: If the kohlrabi leaves are still attached to the bulb, trim them and store separately. If the leaves are in good shape - firm and green - they can be cooked but will need to be used within a couple of days. The bulbs should be stored, unwashed, in a plastic bag. They will hold for about a week in the refrigerator. Smaller kohlrabi are the sweetest and most tender. Bulbs much bigger than the size of a tennis ball won't be as tasty and often have a pithy flesh.

Simple Preparation: Tender, young kohlrabi is delicious eaten raw. Peel the outer skin with a paring knife. Slice, dice, or grate, and add to salads. Use on raw vegetable platters or serve with a creamy dip. Substitute in recipes calling for radishes. Grated kohlrabi can be added to slaw, but lightly salt it first and let stand for several minutes. Squeeze to remove any excess water before adding dressing. Kohlrabi can also be steamed or boiled. For this preparation don't peel until after they are cooked. Steam or boil until bulbs are tender, peel skin, and season with butter, salt, and pepper, a cheese sauce, or just enjoy plain.

If the leaves attached to the kohlrabi bulb are fresh and green, they can be enjoyed as a cooked green. Wash the leaves and remove the ribs. Blanch in boiling water until just wilted, 3 to 5 minutes. Drain and squeeze excess water from leaves. Chop leaves, then saute in a little olive oil or butter. Season with salt and pepper. Add a splash of vinegar or squeeze of fresh lemon juice.|||what is KOHLRABI?

Use your hands to spread the rice evenly onto the sheet, leaving about 1/2 inch of seaweed empty at the bottom. Arrange strips of cucumber and avocado across the center of the rice. Lift the mat and roll over the vegetables once and press down. Unroll, then roll again towards the exposed end of the seaweed sheet to make a long roll. You may moisten with a little water to help seal. Set aside and continue with remaining nori sheets, rice and fillings.
    3. Use a sharp wet knife to slice the rolls into 5 or 6 slices. Serve cut side up with your favorite sushi condiments.|||This is a brand new Vegan book I think you'd really enjoy.

    |||Okay I will check back and see, and if I don't know I will delete my answer, don't worry this is not for point gaming.

What do you mean by raw? As in fruits and veggies? Or grains? Or uncooked, healthy cereals mixed with other stuff like fruits and veggies?

Please, I will come back and check.

Just checked again after something reminded me of it. Okay, grains are good. There are plenty of grains besides wheat that are pretty healthy. I have a website about it. I, personally, love dried cherries, so you can put some grains and dried fruits into a bowl of grains. There are a few healthy cereals like cheerios and rice chex that you might like that you can put in a bowl. And there are nuts that are really tasty such as pecans, walnuts, um . . . there might be others that you like, too. Cashews are tasty, even lightly salted cashews. I am allergic so I didn't mention it right away. You could put some of those in. Make sure to only put a little cereal in if you even want to put any cereal in as they are loaded with carbs. I don't have any special mixes to tell you about. Just put in a lot of grains, throw in a little dried or fresh fruit, maybe some carrots or something, a handful or half a handful of cereal, and some nuts. It doesn't always have to be all together. You could go without the nuts or grains or something else.

Zagat restaurant guides publish ratings of restaurants for many large cities around the world. The review for each restaurant gives a verbal summary as well as a 0- to 30-point rating of the quality of food, d茅cor, service and the cost of a dinner with one drink and tip. For Italian restaurants in London in 2007, the food ratings had a mean of 27.60 and standard deviation of 2.70. The cost of a dinner had a mean of $81.62 and standard deviation of $17.59. I realize that this question really does not belong in France Travel, but I have asked in other places and have never received anything close to a satisfactory answer. This is Central Florida, USA. Has become an area well known for theme parks and now has more than 2 million inhabitants. There are several restaurant guides. One is Urban Spoon. They list 450 Italian restaurants in the area; 715 pizza places; 606 hamburger joints; 359 Mexican and Tex mex: 177 for sushi; 56 Thai; and 44 from Vietnam. I know of maybe two or three first class French restaurants; one excellent French cafe and the two French restaurants at Epcot (Disney World) The two at Disney are strictly for the tourists and in order to visit either, you must pay the park admission of $90 per person. Therefore, my question is - WHY? Where are the French .restaurants? Is it the type of food - the preparation - the size of portions. I do not know. I believe you will find similar situations in just about every USA city, possibly with the exception of New York, New Orleans and San Francisco. Any ideas?|||This is such a good question. I have pondered your very question for years.

Americans want cheap and abundant. The French pride themselves on using only the highest-quality, freshest ingredients, and this will not be cheap, and if you want heaps of food flopping over the plate, sorry, this is not how it's done in French restaurants. The French want their food to taste as good as possible, and they're willing to pay for it. This means hormone-free meat, unpasteurized dairy products, local produce, and most importantly, ingredients like butter and chocolate made by true "artistes", not by big soulless factories. To get the highest quality in a restaurant in America, Americans will have to pay for it, and they don't want to do that, especially if they don't see a huge amount of food on the plate.

In one of his books, Bill Bryson tells the story of a local Mexican restaurant that was always full, and very popular. A branch of a big chain of Tex Mex restaurants opened nearby, selling cheaper meals. Within months the local restaurant closed, and this fact was lamented by most in town, as most agreed the quality of the food was better, but they had mostly decided where to eat based on cost.|||there are not many french immigrants, and the ones that do come do so as professionals.however there are many many italian immigrants. also unlike french, asian immigrants tend to stay together. they meet thorugh things like thai temples (wats) or korean baptist churches. however french people dont really associate themselves in that way.I think most french immigrants move to Quebec not the US so they can be with other people who share their language and even culture to an extent.|||To Amelia's answer, I would add that France has a serious image problem in this country. Though there are of course Francophiles here - you're presumably one of them - as well as people who are neutral about France and all things French, I find that there are also many people here who view France with suspicion and disdain at best, outright contempt bordering on hatred at worst. I won't attempt to quantify this phenomenon by venturing a percentage of the population or anything; suffice it to say I find it to be depressingly common. I'm sure you've heard and/or personally witnessed France-bashing yourself: "the French are rude, pretentious, unkempt, anti-American, antisemitic, effeminate cowards with delusions of grandeur", yadayadayada. This is of course based on a highly politicized and skewed view of history, combined with caricatures that seem to take on a life of their own. I find that such, um, "thinking" is chiefly perpetrated by people who've neither set foot in France nor met anyone from there. Then of course there are people who don't necessarily harbor any ill-will, but who falsely assume that French food is inherently pricey; French culture inherently intimidating and inaccessible.
While I'm certainly not suggesting that this fully explains the dearth of French restaurants in your area (and elsewhere), I'd say it's a significant mitigating factor.

i've been vegetarian for 5 months and have done all my research about the things i have to be careful about and vegetarianism is extremely health if you do it right and i have, i don't live off of french fries and coke and i eat lots of veggies fruits and i've even looked in the phone book at the restaurant guide and found all these places i can eat out at and highlighted the food that i can order, i've planned it out very well, and all i'm looking for is some thumbs up and "good job" even if the person doesn't believe in it, i just am tired of ppl being mean when they know nothing about being vegetarian, my new bf's mom wasn't in my face like my last bf, but she looked troubled and said "Oh honey, you're gonna be really ill if you eat like that" she's an older woman and just the fact that she said that tells me she knows nothing about what i'm doing cuz if she did she wouldn't have said that, i didn't say anything, i learned my lesson last time with my ex's parents, but it's just troubling that people aren't very well informed about the health benefits of being vegetarism...i'm the vegetarian that does it for the health, not the murder of animals, i know that sounds horrible and i love animals, but i don't wanna be all stressed out cuz i'm worried about every little piece of food i put in my mouth, ya know...and i'm writing this in a calm tone btw...i'm really looking for some help, i get really bothered that people will tell me i'm gonna be sick and i won't get the nutrition from a vegetarian diet when they know nothing about it. If they had at least looked it up and saw some benefits. and it's not even the fact that they aren't vegetarians, because i know that's personal choice and i don't wanna intrude on that, but when i do all my research and am aware of the pros and CONS of vegetarianism (B12 and calcium and iron defiancy, solution: drink soy milk or eat cheese, ether eat lots of veggies with iron or if you're anemic take a supplement, and drink/eat foods that are fortified with B12, problem solved, vegetarianism can be healthy if you do it right) But when i'm proud of myself for being healthy and they start firing off these myths that aren't true and talk to me like i don't know what i'm talking about, i get mad and i have a temper when ignorant ppl treat me that way without a reason or logic, and i blow up, but i'm trying to work on my people skills cuz i don't want people to think that's how all vegetarians are like, we are nice people but it hurts my feelings and irritates me when i know what i'm talking about and it's not like i'm bias, i looked at the Cons of doing this, but there's so much negativity, and i just want some tips from both vegs and non vegs, like for example, i'm open and willing to learn what really bugs you about vegetarians, i want to learn so i don't do that, and veg's tell me how you over came this struggle. i'm being very calm and i just really wanna learn so i don't alilenate myself, thank you|||Well it depends who is doing the asking.

In the case of a bf's mom, when she says "oh honey you're gonna get sick," just say you take multivitamins. That's not someone I'd argue the point with or someone where it's appropriate to teach her something about nutrition.

In the case of a friend or a peer though, just rattle off some facts about vegetarianism they wouldn't know. You can say it in a nice way if you really want like, "well actually you can get more than enough B12 with _____" or "I get my iron from _______"

If the friend or peer keeps pressing the point beyond that, then it's worth getting into an argument about if you really want to...but in that case they'd be the ones who antagonized YOU, not the other way around.|||Please do YOUR research. Mother seeks $100 million in son鈥檚 death

    By Phil Ray, pray@altoonamirror.com

HOLLIDAYSBURG 鈥?The mother of a man killed in a triple homicide last year plans to sue the federal government for $100 million, court documents state.

Sandra Miller of Altoona is the mother of Stephen Heiss, who died Aug. 28, 2005.

Miguel Padilla was convicted and received death sentences this month for killing Alfred Mignogna, owner of the United Veterans Association building; Fredrick Rickabaugh Sr., UVA doorman; and Heiss, a patron.

The jury wasn鈥檛 told that Padilla is an illegal alien.

The civil lawsuit notice, filed by attorney Art Cohen of Hollidaysburg, blames the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for allowing Padilla to remain in the United States.

Padilla, 27, came to America as a young boy with his mother and brothers to escape an alcoholic father.

He graduated from Penn Cambria High School but never became a U.S. citizen.

He was involved in a stabbing incident in which the victim was his then-father-in-law.

ICE never took Padilla into custody or attempted to deport him.

U.S. Rep. Bill Shuster, R-9th District, spoke of the case on the House floor, saying ICE did nothing about Padilla.

Most of the money sought is for punitive damages because the government did not take any action that could have prevented the homicides.

An attorney with ICE declined comment Wednesday. ICE has asked Cohen to provide it with more details concerning the Padilla case.|||This is great news....I asked a question awhile back if people thought victims of an illegal should be able to sue the Gov. the majority said yes. I wish more would start suing!! I hope she wins and I want to stay on top of this to see how it works out.
OH and to answer the Q, yes it is a preventable death. Our gov. and greedy business owners have American blood on their hands, not as much as the actual perpetrator, but they do have some.
Another Great post seals!! thanx for this one!!

~add on~ If a moron can sue McDonalds (for her own idiocy) AND actually friggin wins, then I am sure this mother has a case.|||yes. thats funny because a girl asked a question yesterday about whether she could sue the government for her father being killed by an illegal. i hope she sees this.|||Just put a bullet in his brain.|||I don't know if you could relagate murder to the fact that he's an illegal allien. I'm sure percentage wise the numbers are overly favoring Legal citizens as committing 99.999999% of the murders even though illegal alliens may make up 1% of the population.

Yeah if he wasn't here those people wouldn't have gotten murdered. Yes he shoud've been deported. However I think that the illegal allien problem is not the cause of violent crime in the U.S.
It's poverty and greed.|||Yes, and I hope she wins her lawsuit.|||All illegals should have to apply for citizenship. What they are doing is illegal, thus the name!|||If Immigration laws were actually enforced, then the death could have been prevented. I hope she wins her lawsuit, everything that she is asking for, plus another $100 million. Maybe a win in court like that will actually get the government to do their jobs and protect the boarder better.|||Shouldn't we be putting our energies into *these* preventable deaths?

    American Deaths:
    Since war began (3/19/03):2708
Iraqi civilian deaths: 43546|||Another useless death - the cop in Houston...the police officers in Houston are planning a rally in Houston at the city hall reflecting pool on Tuesday, 10/3 from 11 til 1 to drum up support for the lack of pubic safety, homeland Secutiry & law enforcement...their argument is that the don't ask, don't tell policy concerning illegals of the Houston PD is a detrement to public safety. I don't live near houston but if i did i would be there....instead I guess I'll just have to email the city of houston to show my support.....Can/Will all of you do the same? http:\\www.houstontx.gov|||Yeah another person just trying to get some easy cash.Though if she wins the courts will be overflowing with people who claim that ex convicts killed someone in their family because they didn't keep them in jail.In order for her to win she will have to prove that in reality if this person had been deported that her family member would have still been alive. And since when is Ice obligated to check the legal status if every person arrested?Perhaps if someone had reported him to Ice as being an illegal then yes they could say Ice did nothing otherwise they cannot stop every single person and ask them for legal status without at least have a strong reason for it.Like if they suspect a company is hiring illegals. Its like someone stopping you on the street and asking what your religion or sexual preference is.But yet again maybe it will work but highly doubt it.

Obviously each country is different. I'm referring to AUSTRALIA. Thanks.|||Tax deductions are available to be offset against income earned from a particular activity. If all of your income came from restaurant reviews, you would have a case but not otherwise.|||I think because that this is your business, it is your job. this can be a tax deduction, just as tools are for a tradesman. as long as it is just what you do for jobs, one meal for one person.

I think I understand but I thought I'd ask here. (I am not overweight but it's good to try to eat healthy and cut out junk etc.) I did 20min. on a treadmill and burned 100 calories (1 pack of 100 calorie Doritos!) So I jumped on the internet to research restauraunt food. Take Breadsticks from Pizza hut it says 150 calories so are items such as that, pizza, chips etc. per piece/slice? If so then a 5 pack of Breadsticks means 5X150=750 Calories so you just ate 750 calories correct? (Most restaurant guides say serves X grams. Half a Pzone is a serving so a whole Pzone is 1,260 Calories!!! IT TOOK 20MIN. to burn 100 CALORIES!!!!! Thanks for your help. :-)|||do realize that you burn calories doing average things such as eating, sleeping, walking, and driving. I am looking to lose about 45-50 pounds!! I saw this one program that had these hand things and guides on how to make certain dishes and restaurant guides and stuff and then of course there's neutrosystem and Jenny Craig! What's the best?? Has anyone lost large amounts of weight on any of these systems?? How much did you lose and how fast?? Please help!!!! Thanks so much!!!|||Hello Sparkles,

If you are looking for best weight loss systems you have a strict diet to follow like what i have done. I was 152 pounds before I started planning to loss weight. Following the strict diets and exercises given to me I've lost 60 pounds.

I always make sure to eat at least some healthy fats in most of my meals. Eating enough healthy fats is very important for maintaining proper fat burning and muscle building hormone levels in my body. Adequate healthy fats in my diet also helps in keeping my appetite under control. My gym instructor told me that burning to much fat and eating less of it, is not good. So if you aim to burn fats/calories there must be a balance. I also eat a high quality protein source with each meal and snack that I eat. Quality proteins from grass-fed meats, grass-fed raw dairy, and even from plant sources such as nuts and beans provides good appetite suppression so I can control my calorie intake easier.

And regarding with the exercises I have done. I jog ever morning, do bicycle crunches that really helps my stomach work. Doing arms and legs exercise at the same time I get enhanced work in my stomach muscles, and by twisting I get increased work in my oblique muscles. All parts of my stomach are worked with this one exercise. It really helps a lot in getting rid of my belly fats.

Hope that helps. If there is anything more I can do for you just drop me a line.|||I would recomend herbal magic! its all natural i use to work at one in my town ive seen wonderful results, my sister did it and lost 75 pounds in 4 months ive seen what it can do, there are a few catches though it is fairly pricey but id say its worth it.. its more of a lifestyle change you have to be really commited inorder to succeed.. if you have good will power and if you really wanna do it you can also going off the pills ive seen alot of people gain there wait back but its only because they stopped eating healthy.. you cant do it and then go back to eating junk (not saying you do) but diet is important if you want to stay healthy and keep fit... just a suggestion|||Just burn more calories then you consume. Hi!...two of my friends from Australia are coming to visit me at the end of November and I am sooo thrilled about it. When i pick them up from the airport i want to give them each a small gift box with a bunch of things i think they will need or might be able to use as they tour around New York City. The ideas i have right now are: a metrocard, a map of the city, a subway map of the city, and a restaurant guide. I don't want it to be too expensive but i would like the box to get them excited about thier visit and have substantial, useful infromation. Thanks for your help!|||Also if you go to the Empire State Building there's a visitor information kind of booth set up where you can just pick up free pamphlets of different sights to see or tours that they can take. If anything, it'll be some nice things to take back home as souvenirs! Oh and a nice gift I like to buy for friends are those mini taxicab magnets.|||I think that what you have is perfect. Maybe also include the current Time Out New York to give them ideas of things to do. I wouldn't worry about including other food or gifts in the package. Half the fun of visiting a new city is taking in all the sights, visiting restaurants, and doing your own souvenirs shopping. If you give them a place to stay, as well as tips and tools for getting around, that's more than enough.|||I think you're on the right track. A MetroCard is a good idea, along with a subway map (very handy). Maybe you can highlight your favorite places in the restaurant guide they might like. There are booths in tourist areas like City Hall that give out brochures for various sites around the city, maybe you can collect a bunch of those and include them. You might also think about including some New York delicacies - a salami from Katz's, or a bottle or two of Manhattan Special coffee soda for a bit of old-time New York flavor.

I've had nothing but mediocre meals during my visits to Estes. Have you had a good meal at a restaurant there? If so, where? I'm only interested in personal or word-of-mouth recommendations -- no search results from restaurant guides, please.|||My husband and I visit Estes several times a year and we like good food. The best place we've been to is Twin Owls Steakhouse. Excellent food in a casually elegant atmosphere. Beef and game are their specialities. Their elk loin is to die for! A meal for two with wine will be around $100, well worth it.

Another nice place is The Gallery which specializes in fresh fish flown in from the Pacific. Lots of interesting recipes, definitely not your run-of-the-mill fishhouse.

My favorite Italian place is Sweet Basilico. It's very small, about 15 tables and you may have to wait for a table, but it's worth the wait! Excellent, fresh Italian at very reasonable prices. Dunraven Inn is also good for Italian. I love their Alfredo dishes - very rich!

my family is celiac so i'm looking for a gluten free restaurent guide that help us when we want to eat out. please help.|||Hi Shawna,
    You can try www.specialgourmets.com
It is a free guide (community driven) of restaurants/hotels/shops for people with celiac disease (and other food allergies). It has just been launched a couple of months ago, but has currently more than 5000 places. The easiest way to find places/restaurants is to interact with the map (select 'gluten-free' and zoom in to the region you want). Alternatively you can try typing the name of the city in the search box (typing toronto, for example, will give you now 37 results - you can click the map markers or click the 'see results as a list' link). Hope it helps!|||Hi Shauna,

The equation that predicts the cost of a dinner using the rating of the quality of food is yhat = 6.99 + 6.2x. The correlation between these two variables is 0.63. Which of the following is a correct interpretation of the slope?

    A. A one unit increase in price results in a 6.2 unit increase in the average rating
    B. A one unit increase in rating results in 6.2 unit increase in the average price
    C. For restaurants with a rating of 0, the average price of the meal is $6.20

While I'm certainly not suggesting that this fully explains the dearth of French restaurants in your area (and elsewhere), I'd say it's a significant mitigating factor.

ok i know loads of girls say they like nice guys but they are just trying to be politically correct because they know they're supposed to, and most of the guys who say girls like nice guys are only saying that because they've heard girls say it. for the sake of all women i am just going to say it: we do not like nice guys! please don't be a nice guy, it is such a turn off, i totally hate it. don't be a jerk but just find some middle ground ok? like one guy i was dating asked me "permission" to change his display name on myspace are you for real? don't ask for permission to do that what do i care i'm not your guardian i'm your GIRLFRIEND! don't call me every 24 hours to "see how i'm doing", don't get me flowers every single date, don't ask me what i want to do, don't! i dont like it or want it. i want a man who will take the lead and take me on a ride (NOT a sexual thing! i mean like an emotional ride)! who will allow me to just sit in the passenger's seat and experience (and not shout out directions at every minute). who will order for me at restaurants, guide me through life, make the important decisions, make the plans, let me anticipate his calls by not having them at consistent times, make me wonder about him like all the girls in the romance novels *sigh*. i know i know all these things are typically frowned upon but for the sake of women everywhere PLEASE there are way too many nice guys, and if most women would me more upfront about what we really want this would not be a problem!! i dont want a nice guy i want a real one.

i've been vegetarian for 5 months and have done all my research about the things i have to be careful about and vegetarianism is extremely health if you do it right and i have, i don't live off of french fries and coke and i eat lots of veggies fruits and i've even looked in the phone book at the restaurant guide and found all these places i can eat out at and highlighted the food that i can order, i've planned it out very well, and all i'm looking for is some thumbs up and "good job" even if the person doesn't believe in it, i just am tired of ppl being mean when they know nothing about being vegetarian, my new bf's mom wasn't in my face like my last bf, but she looked troubled and said "Oh honey, you're gonna be really ill if you eat like that" she's an older woman and just the fact that she said that tells me she knows nothing about what i'm doing cuz if she did she wouldn't have said that, i didn't say anything, i learned my lesson last time with my ex's parents, but it's just troubling that people aren't very well informed about the health benefits of being vegetarism...i'm the vegetarian that does it for the health, not the murder of animals, i know that sounds horrible and i love animals, but i don't wanna be all stressed out cuz i'm worried about every little piece of food i put in my mouth, ya know...and i'm writing this in a calm tone btw...i'm really looking for some help, i get really bothered that people will tell me i'm gonna be sick and i won't get the nutrition from a vegetarian diet when they know nothing about it.

  • If I want to set up a restaurant guide/review business such as a website, can I get a tax deduction on my meals for restaurants that I review?
