For a long time ive wanted to own my own Bar/Pub I just graduated high school and got my bartending licence in a summer class. I plan to attend college in the spring and was wondering what major does this career choice fall under?|||Brian,

While there is no specific major you should/would need to take if you plan to own a bar, Business might be a good major to pursue. Furthermore, some colleges and universities have seperate minors or courses in entrepreneurship and those should be the classes you take. Entrepreneurs are those that start their own businesses, which is precisely what you are! In any case, business is probably the best major, but if the school you attend has a seperate major or concentration in marketing, you might want to take that as well. Then, you'll be able to figure out how to get the word out there about your pub!

Hopefully it turns out well for you!

Edit: Yes, restaurant management would be great, but most four year colleges and universities don't offer restaurant management, although a select few do. You'll have to search if you want to find a four year university with that field. I would suggest a B.A. in Business at least because that way if the pub does fall through, you'll have a degree to fall back on. You could always get a second job with a business degree too in order to keep the cash flow coming. If you have a degree in restaurant management (and I'm not even sure if you can get a B.A. in that) and the pub goes over...your kind of screwed.|||I would look into resturant management type of field. A straight up bar/pub is hard to maintain. Normally people incorporate food during the day, then drinking and bands at night. So it would be more important to understand the running of the resturant where they will also teach you how to run a bar.|||You need to major in general business with a specialization in entrepreneurship. You also need to take some finance classes, accounting classes, management classes, and some human resources classes. However, a general business degree in Entrepreneurship should cover all of these things.

Having some experience in Hotel and Restaurant management would be helpful too.

Good luck. Bars/nightclubs are a tough business. They go under quite often.
