My friend who bartends said that not all places require you to go to school and get a bartending license, but that you get a job based on experience. how do i get experience? where should i start, and if i should go to school, where would you recommend?|||Go to a bar or a club and see if you can work as a barback (assists a bartender in a busy club where you clean the bar stations, go get kegs... do anything the bar needs).
If you can't find a job doing this then work at a restaurant with a bar and start out bussing and washing dishes... the restaurant business is not elite and rewards a hardworker. I would work at a restaurant over being a barback because starting at the bottom in a restaurant gives you more opportunities in the service industry. But you have to bust your *** and not complain... and be patient but you will get what you want. And you might find out that you prefer the kitchen to the bar.|||I started with really no real knowledge of bartending at a small mom & pop restaurant. You learn very fast. And when in doubt about a drink, politely say to the customer "I know there are lots of ways to make a *whatever*, how would YOU like it made?" Then commit it to memory. The bonus of this practice is that the customer gets it exactly like they like it and tip better.
